Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore the influence of selected factors in journal citations. Various factors can affect citations distribution of journals. Among them, skewness of citations distribution, author self-citation, journal self-citation and recitations (RCs) have been studied.

Design/methodology/approach

The present study based on 16 systematically selected journals indexed in Scopus under the subject category “Library and Information Science.” The study was confined to original research and review articles that were published in the selected journals in the year 2011. The temporal citation window from 2011 to 2014 was taken for analysis. Tools like, Scopus author ID, ORCID and author profiles from Google Scholar were used to minimize the error due to homonyms, spelling variances and misspelling in authors’ names.

Findings

It is found that citations distribution in majority of the journals under the study is highly skewed and more likely to follow log-normal distribution. The nature of authorship in papers was found to have positive effect on citation counts. Self-citing data show that higher ranked journals have rather less direct impact on total citation counts than their lower counterpart. RCs are also found to be more in top-tier journals. Though the influence of self-citations and RCs were relatively less at individual level on total citations of journals but combined, they can play a dominant role and can affect total citation counts of journals at significant level.

Research limitations/implications

The present study is based on Scopus database only. Therefore, citation data can be affected by the inherent limitation of Scopus. Readers are encouraged to further the study by taking into account large sample and tracing citations from an array of citation indexes, such as Web of Science, Google citations, Indian Citation Index, etc.

Originality/value

This paper reinforces that the citations received by journals can be affected by the factors selected in this study. Therefore, the study provides better understanding of the role of these selected factors in journal citations.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide an introduction to NewGenLib 3.0, as well as a case study which seeks to document the experiences of using NewGenlib3.0.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper provides description on technology used and the architecture of NewGenlib3.0. It also documented the experience of using NewGenlib 3.0 in the Learning Resource Center of Indira Gandhi Institute of Technology as well as views about NewGenLib3.0 from participants of OSS workshops.

Findings

Use of well designed system analysis along with well tested and widely supported OSS components and opens standards makes it a very user friendly and reliable Integrated Library Management software which can be easily implemented in a library without much technical hand or a rigorous training program. The open source development process facilitated the sharing and collaboration that made this rapid improvement possible.

Research limitations/implications

In this paper, NewGenLib version 3.0.3 U5 has been tested and used, but 3.0.4 R1 released recently has not been tested.

Practical implications

The paper will help other libraries that are considering the possibility of using Open Source Integrated Library Management software in determining the most suitable one.

Originality/value

The paper provides a unique account of a library's experience as well as software architectures and some evaluation by workshop participants.

Abstract

Purpose

With a sustainable knowledge economy in the backdrop, India has seen an exponential growth of academic and sponsored research programmes across all major disciplines. There has been an exponential proliferation of Indian research journals to disseminate results of research carried out in India, by Indian researchers, from collaborative global research programmes. This paper aims to briefly describe a new initiative, the Indian Citation Index (ICI), which is a web‐based citation database of India‐based or India‐focused research journals.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper gives a glimpse of the new ICI initiative. It briefly describes its promises and coverage. This paper is based on data available in the ICI portal and its information brochure.

Findings

The ICI has made an attempt to create a web‐based citation database covering a whole range of disciplines, i.e. sciences, technologies, social sciences and humanities. This paper also identifies similar initiatives in the past, which failed due to the absence of web technologies and web‐based business models.

Research limitations/implications

This paper informs the availability of a web‐based ICI to a worldwide audience. Many in‐depth studies can now be undertaken to measure productivity of Indian research journals vis‐à‐vis Indian researchers using datasets of this citation database. Some studies can also be made to measure popularity of Indian journals amongst foreign researchers and foreign research collaborators.

Social implications

If this initiative is successful, other countries will be inspired to have their own country‐specific citation database to measure performance of home‐grown research periodicals.

Originality/value

This is an informative news article to keep abreast of latest development of a country‐specific citation database.
